Fair Isle Fair Isle Lighthouse Society
Designed and built in 1891 by David A. and Charles Stevenson (cousin of author Robert Louis Stevenson) it entered service in 1892. The tower is 85 feet tall and there are 96 steps to the top. In 1998 it became the last lighthouse in Scotland to be automated. Its foghorn - also Scotland 's last - was dismantled in 2005.

There are two lighthouses on Fair Isle. The South (Skaddan) and the North (Skroo). The machinery and equipment at the South Light were almost identical to that at the North Light. A noticeable difference, however, is the height to the light from the ground is 73 feet. That's another 26 feet of stair climbing to that at the North Light!

Fair Isle North Lighthouse is located at Skroo on the northeastern tip of the island. Fair Isle North Lighthouse is 47 feet high, much shorter than its counterpart on the southern end of the island, due to its elevation of 215 feet. Both Fair Isle North and South Lighthouses were built in 1892.

Thanks to the Northern Lighthouse Board and the members Fair Isle Lighthouse Society, you can now climb to the top of the South Lighthouse Tower just like the Lighthouse Keepers did. A handful of islanders have joined together to form the Fair Isle Lighthouse Society. The main purpose of this group is to over see visitation inside and up the South Lighthouse for tourist.
